Each month, we spotlight a local mom who inspires our community through her story, her family, and the way she balances it all. This month, we’re proud to feature Kay LaShell, a powerful mother, healer, and entrepreneur who’s helping others heal while holding it down at home. Get to know Kay and how her journey is empowering families across our area.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family. (Where you're from, how long you've been in the area, kids' names/ages, fun facts!)
I am from the Bay Area. I was born in Oakland and grew up in Hayward. I have been in the Central Valley since 2006. I have a 16 year old son named Kinston & a 15 year old step-daughter named Noeli.
Fun fact about me: I had no television in my home for 14 years.
Fun fact about my family: We are a family that loves someone with Autism (my son). We all love to sing and dance.

What inspired you to start your business (or get into your field)?
My business was born from a desire to become the best version of myself—not just for me, but for my son. I wanted the skills, tools, and wisdom to heal us, and to guide my family and community on their healing journey too.
What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
My days as a mom and business owner start with movement (yoga, walking, or tai-chi), meditation, and morning prayers. The rest of the day is a flow of business meetings, planning sessions, homeschooling my son, managing his therapy, and seeing my clients.
What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?
The most rewarding part of running my business is having full control of my schedule. I can create the kind of day that I or my family may need — and that’s a true blessing. Time freedom.

What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and how do you handle them?
Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship can be tough, but I’m a mother first and a business owner second. I prioritize in that order. When things conflict, I lean on my support system—and somehow, it always works out.
What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting their own business?
My advice to other moms is to be patient when building your business, especially if it’s purpose-driven. Things and people will reveal themselves in time. Stay flexible because the journey will bring many changes. Most importantly, believe in yourself—you will not fail yourself.
How do you and your family like to spend time together when you're not working?
When we’re not working, my family and I love being in nature—camping, going on day hikes, relaxing at the park or beach. Anything outdoors that brings us peace of mind is our favorite way to spend time together.
